Some pages that were on page five or six in search engines results moved up to the first page of Google results a few weeks after the other versions were created. You can easily imagine how this has affected the traffic of the related webpages.

If you are not running any Adsense campaign, then the trick is still worth doing at least for the free additional traffic it generates which can be turned into sales and clics on Adsense units.
Even if your pages are not monetized, which would be a shame, there's a reason why you've got pages online so more traffic in English because you have a French version of your website should still make sense.

Of course, I am using French as a second language but any other language would do: Spanish and Chinese are largely spoken and the effect in terms of SEO should be similar to the above mentioned.
