How many ads per page is best?

The natural instinct of the internet marketer is to increase the number of ads per page to the maximum.

Google Adsense allows a maximum of three ad units per page. They can be combined with three ad links.

However Google Adsense warns that putting as much as six ads in a page will result in the page looking cluttered. Why would you care if it makes more money? Well, it won't because a page full of ads gets web users to hit the Back button and leave your webpages. This leaves little chance for them to click any of your ads.
